HOW TO MAKE SAND CASTINGS
This technique goes back to Egyptian times and is still used today in industry. What
follows is a method to make decorative cement slabs for the garden. You may use
any shape or design but these will have a Spinone Theme.

Basic Supplies:
Any shallow container -
shoebox, dishpan, old bowls or
baking pans, plastic container
1 bag Play Sand
1 bag Ready Mix Cement
A Bucket to mix cement
water - hose
Spoon & Knife
Wooden sticks
Coffee can – dog dish – plate –
for pattern/shape
Pattern optional

Optional:
pebbles, shells, stones, marbles,
broken glass/colored glass twigs
and anything else that you want to
put in your sand cast. Old jewelry
from necklaces work great!
Different colored gravel for fish tanks
is colorful; and bright.

Use your imagination.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Fill your shallow container with sand -
shoebox or other container. If you're on
the beach or have a large sand deposit,
you can just hollow out a space right in
the sand.
2. Wet the sand so it holds its shape but
will not have water well up and stay in
any depressions made.
3. Use the coffee can, dog dish or plate to
press a round ‘pattern’ about 3 inches deep
in the sand that will become the casting portion.
4. Use a pattern or free hand to shape a Spinone –
head or whole body. Use the stick, knife and
spoon to make depressions. Depressions will
show as raised areas when the casting is done.
5. Lay in stones, marbles, glass etc if you like now.
6. Mix cement in bucket according to directions –
you want it smooth thick but able to pour easily.
7. Fill the depression in the sand up to the top
and smooth out
8. Let it set or harden and remove it from sand.
9. clean off with water and let dry several days.
10. paint is optional
